Liz West: Our Colour Reflection
– ChapelAbout Liz West: Our Colour Reflection
This winter, the historic Chapel will transform in a joyful display of colour and light by artist Liz West.
Our Colour Reflection is an immersive artwork by Liz West that combines vibrant colours and radiant light, creating a captivating sensory experience. Opening during Wakefield’s Our YearLight Up festival, the 18th-century Chapel will be filled with endorphin-boosting light during the darker months.
The artwork is made from hundreds of mirrored discs in a rainbow of colours that will carpet the Chapel’s main space. Set at different heights, they capture and emit natural and artificial light, reflecting architectural details that might otherwise go unnoticed. Changing through each day, the reflections will respond to the weather and light quality outside.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park has always been a part of my life in many different ways. Exhibiting at the Park feels like a pivotal moment and like I have come full circle.
- Liz West
Liz West went to school in Wakefield, and worked as a gallery invigilator at YSP during her holidays from art school. Her work draws on colour theory, the way we perceive and understand light, and how it affects us psychologically. She has drawn inspiration from artists such as Dan Flavin and Olafur Eliasson, as well as James Turrell, whose Deer Shelter Skyspace at YSP she has visited over many years.
Our Colour Reflection is supported by a Culture Grant from Wakefield Council and Our Year, a year-long project of creative activities across the Wakefield District. The artwork was originally commissioned by 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, North Lincolnshire in 2016 with support from Arts Council England.

Exhibition Accessibility
The exhibition is located in The Chapel, which is a converted 18th-century building. It is an approximately 10-minute walk from the main Visitor Centre through the country park, down a steep sloping hill. Off-road mobility scooters are available to hire from YSP Centre free of charge.
Access to the Chapel is via steps or a grassed ramp at the main entrance. The ground floor has flat access throughout, with stone flagstones and a metal grate running the length of the gallery. A pathway runs through the Liz West installation to the rear of the gallery, which is wheelchair accessible. The upper balcony is accessed by a steep, sharply turning staircase which may not be suitable to visitors with mobility issues.
There is bench seating available on the ground floor, and pew seating on the balcony. There are no public toilet facilities at the Chapel.
