Frink began modelling heads as a student at the Chelsea School of Art. Her first, produced in 1952, was modelled on her then boyfriend, Arthur Collings. Frink tended not to use models in her later works, carrying out much of her work in isolation. Despite this, she did take inspiration from those around her and her work did take on the features of the people closest to her. Frink succeeds in capturing a sense of defiance with In Memoriam II as the features of the figure express great sadness but also a sense of dignity.
