The egg has a long-established role in art as a symbol of life, creation, originality, and mortality. Gavin Turk has created over 600 artworks where the egg is present – whether in giant form, broken shells, or even mayonnaise. Oeuvre (Verdigris) features markings reminiscent of a duck egg. It looks familiar in the landscape yet at the same time comic and surreal due to its oversized scale. Its title plays on the word for the life’s work of an artist – ‘oeuvre’ – and the French for egg – ‘oeuf’.

James Turrell has been building Skyspaces since 1974. These chambers contain only seating, lighting, and a hole in the ceiling through which to view the sky. While staying at YSP in 1993, Turrell became fascinated by an 18th century deer shelter. He drew up plans for a Skyspace in it, which were finally realised in 2006. The Deer Shelter Skyspace harnesses the changing light of the Yorkshire sky. It's a beautiful place of contemplation and revelation in any season, but particularly joyful in the daylight of spring.

In 2010 we invited David Nash to make a permanent intervention in the landscape at YSP. He proposed replacing the worn steps up from the lakes towards Oxley Bank. Nash's 71 oak slab steps create a stunning installation that erodes and changes over time. They lead up to the highest points of the Park – perfect for a springtime stroll.

Japanese artist Masayuki Koorida grew up in the countryside, and his love of nature is partly what inspired him to become an artist. He's known for his elegant and simple abstract stone sculptures. In contrast to their materials, these two sculptures seem to mimic organic forms. Growth is shaped like a tuberous root while Flower appears to have grown out of the ground, looking at home in YSP's landscape.

Sitting is our very own spring hare, a solitary and watchful presence in the YSP landscape.⁠ The monumental wire work is one of many of Sophie Ryder’s creations centred on the character of the Lady Hare. This hybrid being has the head of a hare and a body modelled on the artist’s own.⁠

In their artwork, Lucy + Jorge Orta confront some of the 21st century’s most important issues including biodiversity, environmental sustainability and climate change. Diana was renamed by the artists in 2014 to celebrate Diana Beaumont, who owned the Bretton Estate from the late 1700s until her death and was instrumental in the development of the grounds and gardens.
