About Light Organ

Visitors were invited to step into a magical world of light, colour and sound during winter 2023/2024 to discover Light Organ, a joyful and interactive artwork that brings sound to life with mesmerising colours and patterns of light. Visitors could sing, talk and clap into the microphones to activate a series of 40 large pipes that transformed the noises into a sculptural display of colourful, glowing lights.

Light Organ is the collaborative invention of local artists Akeelah Bertram, Adam Glatherine and creative technologist Simon Fletcher.

We wanted to create something uplifting and playful to encourage people to experiment and share our love of light and sound.

- Akeelah Bertram

Light Organ was created for Bradford Cathedral in 2021, and in 2022 it was a focal point of Leeds Light Night, illuminating Leeds Art Gallery’s Central Court.

The Light Organ Lates series ran throughout the winter. These unique evening events offered a rare opportunity to visit the park after-hours and spend an evening illuminated by Light Organ as it was activated by artists, poets and musicians to create electrifying performances. Light Organ also featured in this year’s Light Up Wakefield weekend, which invites you to see the city in a whole new light, with an enchanting series of events, installations and projections across the district.

Supported with a Culture Grant by Wakefield Council, as part of Light Up Wakefield 2023 and Our Year – Wakefield District 2024.
