Press Story
Spring is in the air at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) this Easter, with new outdoor artworks, family-based activities and three new indoor exhibitions to enjoy.
Just off the M1 near Wakefield, YSP is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors over the Easter holidays, all set to explore 500 acres of rolling parkland, awash with budding colours, emerging wildlife and the new spring lambs enjoying their first wobbly steps.
Across the school holidays, visitors can wander at their own pace, spotting more than 90 extraordinary sculptures including iconic works by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, alongside vibrant contemporary pieces. Each artwork transforms the landscape into an outdoor gallery that’s as inspiring as it is fun to explore. Head to the YSP Visitor Centre on arrival to pick up a Wonder Kit filled with activities to encourage groups to talk, draw and use their imaginations together.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park is the perfect place to stretch your legs and swap screens for adventures. Little ones will love a game of sculpture hunting or hide-and-seek, with the next bend possibly revealing a giant hare, a Damien Hirst homage to motherhood or perhaps a bright abstract form by Vanessa da Silva set against the Yorkshire skies.
In the Chapel, visitors will encounter Nicola Turner’s Time’s Scythe – whose work was recently featured in the Margot Robbie blockbuster Wuthering Heights – while the Weston Gallery spotlights powerful rope-based installations in a new show Rise by LR Vandy. These atmospheric spaces encourage families to slow down, look closer and spark new conversations about what art can be.
If April showers arrive, in the Underground Gallery the acclaimed William Kentridge exhibition, The Pull of Gravity, is complemented with playful activities in The Studio - YSP’s hands-on making and creating space where children and grown-ups can build, experiment and let their imaginations run wild. This could be your last chance to catch the Pull of Gravity which closes on April 19. There is also Storytelling in the Underground Gallery on 28th March.
Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Roger Hiorns: Seizure, open daily between 2.30-3.00pm during the holidays. In 2008, Roger Hiorns transformed an empty council flat in Southwark, London into Seizure, a sparkling blue world of copper sulphate crystals. The work was created using 75,000 litres of liquid copper sulphate, which was pumped into the former dwelling to create a strangely beautiful crystalline growth on the walls, floor, ceiling and even the bath of the abandoned flat. Seizure was eventually acquired by the Arts Council Collection and the work - weighing over 31 tonnes - was successfully extracted and installed at YSP.
For younger explorers, Little Wild Wood remains a highlight. This natural play area invites children to climb, build dens and invent their own games among trees and stepping stones. Here, art and play go hand in hand – a giant pineapple or desert rat sculpture might become part of a new make-believe world for the afternoon.
The hugely popular Hidden Forest will also open on Wednesdays and Thursdays over the school holidays. Here children can get creative, connect nature with drawing, sculpture building and sensory activities.
When it’s time to refuel, The Kitchen Café offers a special £5 kids’ meal deal and a carvery lunch on Easter Sunday, as well as seasonal favourites such as Hot Cross Buns. Park admission starts at just £9.50 for adults, and children (aged 18 and under) go free. Parking is free and included as part of admission.
Kevin Todd, Interim Director of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, said: “Easter is always a special time at YSP. The landscape comes to life with colour and wildlife, and families can enjoy discovering art together, both outdoors and in our galleries.
“Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning for a new adventure, there’s something here to inspire every generation. And with family and dog-friendly cafés, along with our award-winning gift shops, it’s an Easter day out that’s easy to plan and hard to beat.”
