Art of Words

Words, letters and language have been both subjects and materials for many contemporary artists. For some artworks, they add another layer of texture or shape. For others, they stir emotion, tell a story, or make a political statement.

Much of the artist Robert Indiana’s work centred on words and their physical form. The artist’s iconic LOVE (Red Blue Green) (1966–1998) currently welcomes visitors at the entrance to YSP. To coincide with our exhibition Robert Indiana: Sculpture 1958-2018, we’ve put together this guide to other artworks at YSP that use words.

Neon rallying calls. Playful interventions in the landscape. Contemplative moments. Our displays of art outdoors harness the power of words in all kinds of ways.
