Nigel Hall: Sculpture & Drawing 1965–2008
– Underground Gallery, OutdoorsAbout Nigel Hall: Sculpture & Drawing 1965–2008
This major exhibition presented a new assessment of Hall’s career over a 40-year period, during which time he developed a practice preoccupied with landscape and refined mark-making in space: an exploration of edge and shadow, and of spatial interval.
The exhibition featured large-scale sculptures for both the Underground Gallery and the open air, together with drawings ranging from early, small figurative representations, to very large abstract works made in recent years.
Sculptures included painted aluminium wall works made in the 1970s and 1980s, large free-standing bronzes from the 1980s and 1990s, alongside Hall’s more recent, highly precise wooden and corten steel constructions. The outdoor spaces featured Crossing (Horizontal) and Crossing (Vertical), two major corten steel sculptures from 2006.
An artist who brings a sophisticated formal invention and contemplative breadth to both public and private space
