Siting sculpture in the landscape creates different experiences of artwork, and at YSP our outdoor galleries bring new perspectives to world-class sculpture.
In collaboration with the Italian Council, YSP hosted an online symposium to explore this further, with a presentation by Professor Anna Mazzanti from Politecnico di Milano and YSP Associate Director, Programme, Helen Pheby discussing the impact of sculpture in outdoor public places.
Drawing on topics from a new publication, Land Art, including public gardens, unusual landscapes, street art and muralism in Tuscany, this is an opportunity to discuss new ideas and meet contributors to the publication.

Serge Spitzer: Untitled
The sculpture creates, encloses and protects its own interior, which can be glimpsed through the spaces held open by rubber pads. Spitzer chose to reflect upon the character and history of the location for his sculpture and to encourage active looking and questioning. It is not immediately clear if the beam emerges from, or supports, the quarry face. When seen from different angles, the sculpture creates different senses of stability and balance, of open and closed spaces. - Art Outdoors

Gazing Ball was originally commissioned for The National Trust’s Folly! programme, in which artists create responses to re-imagine lost follies at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, North Yorkshire.
