About Keisha Thompson: Dérive

Dérive: the unfolded path. An evening of poetry, music and meandering.

Join Keisha Thompson as she comes to the end of her year-long residency with Yorkshire Sculpture Park. We will meet in the Skyspace where Keisha will share a collection of poems and songs developed during her time at the Park. For this performance, Keisha will be joined by special guests, Rahki Singh (Manchester Collective) and Al Conteh (Im:Pact). All attendees of this event will receive a copy of the printed poems in the form a special limited edition sculptural chapbook.

The poems and song will make connections between nature, mathematics and hair culture. Expect to be pulled in all directions from the heady to the comedic, as Keisha explores these themes with care and curiosity.

The term Dérive was coined by a group of surreal Parisian artists in the 1950s who wanted to capture the concept of an unplanned journey through a landscape. Guy Debord is quoted as describing it as “playful-constructive behaviour” with an “awareness of psychogeographical effects” that are “quite different from the classic notions of journey or stroll”. This idea of meandering and rambling without direction, is something that Keisha has been exploring during her time in the Park. This type of wandering allows a deeper connection to nature and the landscape as well as time for reflection, these are all themes that are incorporated into Keisha’s writing and performance.

A limited number of copies of Keisha’s chapbook will be available to purchase in the YSP Shop later this Spring.
