Hannah Cash

23 Sep–6 Oct 2019

The 2019 Yorkshire Graduate Award Hannah Cash is a recent graduate from York St John University, whose work examines the movement of bodies and involves a physical engagement within a landscape.

Through working collaboratively with her sister Jasmine Cash who is a dancer, the work aims to examine the encounter between drawing, choreography and film in order to investigate the forms of thinking-feeling-knowing. Approaching film-making as collage, she attempts to form abstract narratives, which are constructed around notions of materiality and physicality between two bodies.

Her films are projected on assemblages that are formed of industrial and mass-produced materials to construct seductive environments. Where a playful space is formed for both maker and audience through exploring the boundaries between the body, material and the space surrounding.

Since the very beginning in 1977, YSP has offered artists a unique space to work and think. We continue to host artist residencies, open studios and laboratories for experimental and risk-taking practice, underpinned by the support of our curatorial and technical expertise. Over the last few years, YSP has supported recently graduated artists, in partnership with the University of the Arts and the Royal College of Art in London.

Building on this successful programme, in 2018 YSP introduced the Yorkshire Graduate Award, to extend the opportunity to local universities. The scheme was open to any student, from any creative course, due to graduate from University that year.

It can be a difficult time after leaving University as a young artist, with many losing access to workshops, studio spaces and support networks. The YSP Graduate Award offers an opportunity for recent graduates to reflect on their practice and begin to move forward as an artist.

This exciting residency at the Park, offers food and accommodation, access to our facilities including metal and wood workshops, studio space and time with our highly skilled technical team. The awardee also receives a budget for materials in the development of new ideas, and receives critiques and guidance from YSP’s Curatorial Team.

Hannah Cash was born in North Wales and studied Fine Art at York St John University. Her most recent work involves working in collaboration with her twin sister who is a recent Dance graduate of York St John University whose key interests include choreography, outdoor performance and film testing the relationship between the body and landscape.
