Connor Shields

8 Apr–23 Apr 2019

The 2018 Yorkshire Graduate Award artist Connor Shields is a recent graduate from Leeds Arts University, whose sculpture and performance are concerned with his perceptions of ‘maleness’.

Shields explores and challenges ideas of working-class masculinity through his use of materials and processes. Combining industrial objects such as bricks and scaffolding with materials and techniques that have feminine associations, such as knitting, he attempts to question societal principles that shape us, based on our binary sex.

‘The future needs men who can talk through their pain. Through this work, a narrative has been found.’

That Looks Queer!
