Sir Alan Bowness

YSP's Trustees and staff were sad to hear of the death of Sir Alan Bowness, and our thoughts are with his family.

The art world has lost a major figure who contributed much through his work as Professor of Art History at The Courtauld, Director of Tate, and founding Director of the Henry Moore Foundation.

We will miss him as one of the founding Trustees of Yorkshire Sculpture Park. As the son-in-law of Barbara Hepworth and good friend of Henry Moore, Sir Alan had a strong connection to Yorkshire and from the outset he recognised the potential of YSP.

His credibility and generosity of spirit helped to provide our fledgling organisation with the confidence to evolve into a major international centre for sculpture. During his tenure as Trustee he established the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds and helped lay the foundations for The Hepworth Wakefield. He brought YSP and the Henry Moore Foundation together, recognising YSP as a great landscape for Henry Moore’s monumental sculptures, and also as the perfect location for Barbara Hepworth’s The Family of Man.

This powerful multi-part sculpture sited on a hillside at YSP will continue to act as a reminder of the huge contribution Sir Alan Bowness made to the development of our organisation.
