Jaume Plensa: Wonderland

YSP Centre

Jaume Plensa is an internationally renowned Catalan artist, who has exhibited in museums and galleries across the world, and is particularly known for his innovative and pioneering projects engaging with public space.

As with much of Plensa’s work, what we see in front of us is only part of the experience. Doors often feature in Plensa’s work, more recently as part of cells which illuminate. He explains that a door, as used in Wonderland, represents a person in the present moment, someone who is standing in front of it and about to pass through. On the other side, unseen, is the future about to be revealed and what is behind the person’s past; the door being the threshold in time with a particular revelatory power as it opens whole realms of new experience.
