William Turnbull: Queen 2

Driveside

As with much of William Turnbull's sculpture, Queen 2 was inspired by his knowledge of ancient cultures and their artefacts; revealing the sculptural potential of utilitarian and functional objects.

The shape of Queen 2, for example, is directly inspired by the bull-roarer: a flat piece of carved wood pierced with a small hole and tied to a piece of string that is spun around to create sound. Bull-roarers have been found on Paleolithic sites and they are still used today in rituals in certain areas around the world.

Queen 2's numerous shallow lines and marks also recall the artist's interest in calligraphy during 1940's. This iconography of signs and symbols gives energy to the surface of the sculpture, as well as highlighting particular aspects.
