William Turnbull: Large Idol

Driveside

After serving as a pilot during the World War II, Turnbull travelled to Paris where he was associated with a thriving artistic community. Early success in Paris and at the 1952 Venice Biennale helped establish him as an important British artist.

Although less than two metres high, Large Idol is a monumental work in terms of its form and presence, with both phallic and female fertility imagery.
