Bob and Roberta Smith: All Schools Should be Art Schools

All Schools Should be Art Schools was created in April 2017, as part of YSP’s 40th anniversary celebrations. This large-scale work expresses Bob and Roberta Smith’s ongoing concern with the diminishing role of the arts in schools, since Michael Gove’s proposed removal of Art from the GCSE core curriculum in England.

Similar to his other painted works, this piece aims to raise consciousness against the establishment and appeals for political action. It is a bright, colourful statement of inspirational intent positioned next to the YSP Learning building, which reinforces the philosophy of both the artist and YSP.

Continuing his campaign for improved arts education, Smith launched the Art Party in 2013 alongside Cresent Arts in Scarborough with the aim to better advocate the arts within Government. Smith has had numerous solo exhibitions and his work can be found in public and private collections internationally. He recieved an OBE for services to the arts in the New Year honours list for 2017.
