Yorkshire Sculpture Park invites visitors to share their dreams this summer

14 Jul 2016

Visitors to Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) are invited to step into Dreams’ Time Capsule to share their dreams, from 21 to 31 July 2016.
The artwork by Leeds-based visual artist Eva Frapiccini, developed as a research and participatory project, which began in 2011, attempts to create an international audio archive of dreams, collected from visitors during public events in museums, universities and art spaces.
Dreams’ Time Capsule, positioned in YSP’s Formal Garden for 10 days this summer, is a mobile, inflatable structure measuring 3.5m x 3.6m. Visitors are asked to step inside the artwork and donate their own dream – a dream that they remember, but they cannot understand.
Once shared, the dreams are analysed by Frapiccini and a team of researchers, and are used to further understand the patterns that surface in dreams, through different religions, traditions, or geographical areas. More than 1,200 dream testimonies have been collected so far in different countries from Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. This is the first time the project has been presented in the UK.
Dreams’ Time Capsule is inspired by the Jungian concept of a Collective Unconscious – a level of the unconscious shared with members of the human species comprising dormant memories from our ancestral and evolutionary past.
Frapiccini lives and works in Leeds. She is currently undertaking a practice-based PhD in Fine Art at the University of Leeds. Her research experiments with language and its invisible ways of expression using a variety of media and methodologies: slide projections, video and sound installations, film, photography and performance.
