Yorkshire Sculpture Park installs Changing Places toilet

18 Jan 2018

Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) has installed a Changing Places toilet, making the Park more accessible to people with profound and multiple learning, and physical disabilities.
YSP, near Wakefield in West Yorkshire, joins just one thousand other venues in the UK to offer a Changing Places toilet to visitors. The facility, in the Park’s YSP Learning building, features equipment such as a hoist and adjustable bench, and offers suitable space and a safe and clean environment.
Standard accessible toilets do not meet the needs of all people with a disability. People with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well people with other physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis, often need extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilets safely and comfortably. These needs are met by Changing Places toilets.
The Hepworth Wakefield – named Art Fund Museum of the Year 2017, an accolade achieved by YSP in 2014 – will also install a Changing Places toilet by spring 2018. YSP and The Hepworth Wakefield, along with Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute, together form the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, four venues that make Yorkshire the best place to see contemporary and modern sculpture.
Guy Laurie, Director of Operations at YSP, said: ‘We’re delighted to lead the charge for museums and galleries in Wakefield, along with The Hepworth Wakefield, in becoming the first to provide changing facilities for those with profound and multiple disabilities. It’s YSP’s aim to offer the chance for everyone to able to experience great art, and this is a huge step towards making the Park a more accessible space for visitors.’
Kath Knight, Director of Business and Operations at The Hepworth Wakefield, said: ‘We are committed to creating a Changing Places toilet early in the new year so that we can provide the highest possible experience for all visitors to The Hepworth Wakefield. Once complete, all three points of the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle will have a Changing Places facility, making the Triangle exemplary in its ambition to be accessible to all visitors.’
