Family Learning

‘A truly magical experience that captured the whole family's imagination’

Family participant

Our Family Learning programme is informed by an ongoing action-research project called Learning Together. We work with new and existing audiences, local families, and community partners to deliver an innovative, wide-ranging and ambitious programme.

As part of our commitment to families and organisational development we are signed up to the Family Arts Standards. These standards are designed to help families know what to expect from participating arts organisations and cover the basic considerations for visiting venues and engaging in any type of arts experience – from art to theatre, dance and beyond.

As part of our general public offer we have embedded a range of resources in the galleries to support families in their visits and to encourage deeper engagement, understanding and appreciation for the artwork and exhibitions. These include:
– Hands-on, tactile resource baskets with activities to develop looking, thinking and making in response to individual artworks and wider themes
– Family leaflets, which can be used in the gallery and taken away as a record of the visit
– 'Talking Together' cards to encourage questioning and dialogue between families and 'Drawing Together' activities, which use drawing as a tool for observation and interpretation

‘Everything changed because of this project: how I understand my child, how my child talks to me, I feel like I’ve got to know him better before he embarks on a new part of his life’
