Mark Hearld, Raucous Invention: The Joy of Making

Upper Space and YSP Centre
Current
13 Nov 2021–6 Feb 2022

Raucous Invention: The Joy of Making is an ambitious, vibrant, and creative journey, where Mark Hearld has explored connections through collaboration and risk taking to create bold and challenging works. With multiple collaborations, this exhibition is a celebration of the joy and inspiration that comes from working with like-minded makers and organisations.

Working from his studio in York, across a range of media and using the natural world as inspiration, Hearld has created a new body of work including collages, prints, collage sculptures and a collage mural, which comprises of a series of individual images, each sitting as solo pieces, but when places together, creating an incredible large-scale work.

The exhibition includes a special collaboration with world-famous Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall – one of the most respected and influential potteries in the world. Hearld has worked alongside their lead potter Roelof Uys to create a series of hand thrown platters, thrown by Uys in the studio of Bernard Leach, and decorated by Hearld using paper stencils, slips and sgraffito mark making on wet clay.  The surface was then further embellished with intricate detail using glaze recipes from both Bernard Leach and studio potter Svend Bayer.

An exclusive range of artworkds have been made for the show, including a collection of woven jacquard tapestry wall hangings, featuring the iconic work of Hearld, and a small number of bespoke ceramic tankards, created using the skills of a mould maker and printer at the Potteries in Stoke-On-Trent.

Hearld has also worked alongside long-time collaborator Tilley Printing in Herefordshire to create a special exhibition card. Created in two colours, this linocut and letter press print is being sold as a special edition to celebrate the exhibitions, and all proceeds of this item will support Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

A new book is being published by St. Jude's under their Random Spectacular Imprint, documenting Hearld’s creative journey including the process and collaborative approach Hearld used to produce the new body of work for YSP.
